CHAPTER SIX

“DARLING? Why are we going this way?”

After hugging her choked-up father one last time, she and Raul had changed into their bush clothes and had left the wedding reception in the chauffeur-driven limousine. But she was puzzled to discover they were mired in the early-afternoon traffic of downtown Buenos Aires. She thought of course Raul had instructed the driver to head straight for the airport.

A bronzed hand slid to her thigh and remained there, squeezing gently. “You’ll find out in good time,” he murmured, sounding unusually mysterious.

Before long their limo pulled up in front of a modern high-rise. As Raul helped her out of the back seat, her heart started to thud with almost painful intensity. Just a few days ago he’d indicated they couldn’t go on a honeymoon for several months. But obviously he’d been teasing her.

She’d meant it when she’d told him she didn’t mind putting off a vacation until later in the year. But knowing that all along he’d been planning this surprise for her, she was thrilled in ways she couldn’t begin to describe.

“What about our luggage?”

“It’s been taken care of. Shall we go?”

Sliding a possessive arm around her waist, he ushered her toward the entrance. It wasn’t until they were inside the building that she realized her mistake.

“I thought this was a hotel!”

In the elevator, his penetrating black eyes played over her flushed features with heart-stopping thoroughness. “No. It’s my retreat when I come to Buenos Aires for a break from the hospital.”

Heather had no idea. She imagined he stayed with his aunt and uncle when he took time off from Zocheetl. But the more she thought about it, the more she realized a fiercely independent man like Raul would require his own place.

There was so much to learn about him. Now that she was his wife, she had the luxury of getting to know him over a lifetime and would relish every moment.

The second the elevator stopped and the doors opened, he surprised her once more by picking her up in his arms.

“This is one tradition I’ve longed to try out on my new bride,” he whispered against her lips before crushing her mouth beneath his. The next thing she knew, he’d carried her down the hall and over the threshold of a door that he’d unlocked.

“Welcome home, Mrs. Cardenas.”

Heather supposed he used the word “home” whether he was here or in Zocheetl. She didn’t give it any more thought as he carried her through his elegantly furnished penthouse condo.

When he showed her the master bedroom where her suitcases had been placed, she thought of course it had been his destination because he couldn’t wait to make love to her. But it seemed he was intent on showing her around his apartment first.

No matter where he took her—from the two other bedrooms to the modern kitchen, formal dining room and study—she could look out over the city of Buenos Aires.

“The view from up here is breathtaking!”

Yet she much preferred feasting her eyes on her gorgeous new husband.
